Two Mission Vista High School freshmen are organizing a concert at the campus Thursday to raise money for female students in Sierra Leone.

Maddie Wheeler and Taylor Walters have rounded up seven musical acts to perform from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the campus as a fundraiser for Salone Enabling and Empowering Development Inc., a nonprofit that works to promote health and education in the impoverished west African nation.

The music will vary from country and pop to punk and heavy metal, the students said. All the acts have at least one member who attends Mission Vista, which is in Oceanside but is a part of the Vista Unified School District. The concert will be open to the public.

"I feel like it's a great opportunity to use my gifts and talents to help other people," said James Nash, a sophomore who plans to perform.

Taylor got the idea for the show after a presentation in one of her classes from local organizers with the nonprofit, which is better known by its acronym, SEED.

The group oversees a clinic in Sierra Leone that serves more than 4,500 a year with programs aimed at reducing infant and mother mortality, improving health and nutrition, educating women, preventing AIDS and promoting rebuilding, according to the organization's website.

Over the last couple of weeks, the two girls have worked to let their classmates know about the show by putting together a video, making announcements over the school's sound system and printing posters.

They're hoping to raise $1,500, and are asking for a donation of at least $5 for the concert, which will be in the school's theater. The campus is at 1306 Melrose Drive, just off Highway 76.

That money would send 30 girls in Sierra Leone to school for a year, they said.

"We're fortunate here in the U.S.," Maddie said. "It only costs $50 to send a girl to school for a whole year, and we spend that like weekly on Starbucks."

They have also distributed collection boxes to each class at the school to gather additional donations.

Maddie and Taylor said they've never done anything like this before, and they're nervous about how it will turn out.

Still, they said they feel good enough about the experience so far to hope to make it an annual event.

Their teacher Anne Fennell has helped organize the event, which will earn the two students community service credits as part of Fennell's Associated Student Body class. She said it has been incredibly rewarding to see her students so excited about such a good cause.

"There is goodness in the world," she said.
